PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: -- Police have arrested 11 suspects, most of them minors, for assaulting and seriously injuring a French tourist, in the seaside town of Hua Hin.
Simonivet Pou, 26, was attacked in one of the town's beer bar zones on New Year's Day after he tried to help another foreigner in a street brawl. The victim needed brain surgery.
"We arrested the suspects and they have confessed to their crime," Prachuap Khiri Khan police chief Maj General Tanet Suntornsuk said yesterday.
He said nine of the suspects were between 15 and 17 years old, while one was 20, and another, a soldier.
The suspects told police that a drunken foreigner had offended them, so they attacked him. Pou then tried to intervene in the incident and ended up being assaulted himself.
"We have charged them with physical assault," Tanet said.
Following the attack, Pou was rushed to Hua Hin Hospital where he underwent brain surgery. He was then transferred to the Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital in Bangkok after his condition improved.
Pasitta Intaphan, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Prachuap Khiri Kran branch condemned the attack, saying it should never have happened.
"We will raise the issue with the Hua Hin/Cha Am Tourism Association. Relevant authorities need to explore measures that efficiently prevent such problem and ensure tourists' safety," she said.

BANGKOK: -- A former professional boxer has been arrested after he has set fire on his ex-girlfriend out of jealousy, police said.
On 13 January police received reports that the woman, Ms. Supawadee Boonchote, 24, was dosed with gasoline and set on fire in front of a convenience store in Udon Thani province by an assailant who arrived and left the scene on a motorcycle with no license plate.
The victim was later transported to the hospital. Doctors said she suffered severe burned injuries, and she remains under intensive care.
The police later identified the attacker as Mr. Baramee Srikul, 42, a former famous boxer who went by his nickname Baramee Petchpiroon. The officers also reportedly found burns on Mr. Barameer42;s both hands.
The suspect reportedly confessed of his crime, stating that he had been in a relationship with the victim since last year. However, Mr. Baramee said, Ms. Supawadee later ended the relationship with him as she preferred to be in a relationship with a woman.
After several failed attempts to regain his relationship with him, Mr. Baramee said he decided to commit a revenge by setting the woman on fire.
The investigation also revealed that the couple often had heated arguments, and the former boxer regularly ended up beating Ms. Supawadee.
She eventually portrayed herself as a tom boy and engaged in a relationship with another woman in the community to stop Mr. Baramee from asking her to go back into the relationship, police said.

Land of smiles but not for everybody....
PHUKET: -- Two men kicked a pregnant woman off her motorcycle, causing her to break a leg, then dragged her off the road and raped and robbed her in Mai Khao on Sunday night.
The 25-year-old woman is five months pregnant. She was riding home alone from her job as a convenience store cashier when the attack occurred at about 10:30pm on a dark stretch of road between Mai Khao temple and Thepkrasattri Road.
When rescued, the victim was in shock and unable to tell police much about the incident.
“She said that two men rode alongside her and the passenger kicked her bike over. She broke her leg in the fall,” Lt Santi Prakobkarn of Tah Chat Chai Police told the Phuket Gazette.
“They dragged her and her motorbike into the underbrush next to the road and both men raped her. She told them she was pregnant and begged them to stop, but they ignored her,” Lt Santi said.
After the men robbed her of her cash and mobile phone, they fled. The woman then dragged herself to the roadside, where a passing motorist saw her and called the police. Rescue workers took her to Vachira Phuket Hospital.
“It will be difficult to identify the men because the victim couldn’t describe what they looked like. However, we have started to hunt for them,” Lt Santi said.

A BMW driver claims he accidentally killed a motorcyclist who had robbed him this morning in Bangkapi district.
Tawich Kitniyom, 32, the BMW driver told the police that he was driving along Lat Phrao road around 1am when he was robbed as he stopped his car to do a U-turn near soi 130.
Tawich says the motorcyclist, Somkuan Thaidecha, 34, approached his car and tapped on the window, making Tawich lower the glass because he thought the man wanted to ask directions.
The motorcyclist punched him in the face and pulled out a knife, demanding Tawich hands over his valuables.
Tawich handed Somkuan his bag which contained his wallet and phone.
After regaining his senses, Tawich chased after the motorbike in his BMW and accidentally rammed it into a grocery store on Nawamin Soi 14 when Somkuan cut in front of him to turn.
Somkuan was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Lat Phrao locals, Somkuan had robbed several people in the area.
A fifteen-year-old victim told the police that she had been robbed by Somkuan many times, and he had threatened to hurt her family if she went to the police, Daily News reported.

10-Year-Old Boy Sole Provider for Bedridden Parents
By Khaosod English

10-year-old Geng is the sole provider for both of his parents, who have been bedridden for years.
SUKHOTHAI — Before going to school every morning, ten-year-old Geng cooks, feeds, and bathes his parents, who have not been unable to leave their beds for years. He also sweeps and cleans his family’s one-story house, washes the dishes, does the laundry, and empties his parents’ bedpans.
And this is just the beginning of his day. As the only child left at home, Geng has assumed full responsibility for taking care of his parents, who have been bedridden for almost a decade. Geng’s 52-year-old mother was paralyzed from the waist-down after a car accident in 2007, and his father, 47, developed full-scale paralysis after a having a seizure ten ago.
Geng, whose full name is Chanatip Soiphrai, hurries home from school every lunch break to feed his parents. He also takes up menial jobs after school and on the weekends.
"If there is some money left, he gives 20 baht or 30 baht to me for keeping," said Geng's mother Nid Srimueang. "I feel so sorry for my son for having to bear so much burden at his age. But I don't know what else I can do."
Geng’s mother is still able to move her upper body and speak freely, but his father, Noppadol Soiphrai, can only move and communicate with his hands.
"I can only give my moral support to my son," Mrs. Nid said. "I want him to be strong and grow up to be a good man."
Despite this extraordinary burden, Geng said he is not tired by his duties or sad about not being able to play with friends after school.
Asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Geng replied cheerfully, "I want to be a soldier, so I can protect the people and the country."
The director of Geng's school, Prasertsri Tepanwong, described Geng as a bright student and said the school administration is well aware of his family's plight. The school has helped buy lunches and school supplies for Geng, as well as provide him with small jobs for pay, she said.
Ms. Prasertsri added that the school administration has opened a bank account in Geng's name to help raise money for his family. Those who wish to donate to Geng should contact his homeroom teacher at 087-204-4727.

Coconuts Bangkok
Weeks after police released an 80-year-old man accused of raping three minors and pimping them out to six other senior men, authorities re-arrested him and others after the victims’ families took their story to the press.
Udon Thani police announced yesterday the arrests of Somdee Nam-asa, 80, and five other men aged 60 to 72 for raping three teen girls aged 12, 13 and 15.
One other senior man reportedly fled and has gone to ground in Bangkok.
The three victims, who are cousins, were taken to the police by their mothers on Sept. 9 to accuse Somdee, their neighbor, of raping them several times since March and threatening to kill them if they told anyone.
Somdee then started selling the girls to other senior men in the area for a THB500 commission while he would bribe the victims with THB200 to 400 cash each time.
The victims were sent for a physical examination while Somdee was arrested three days later before released on bail – only to return the village and threaten the victims anew.
Living in fear, the mothers took the story to the Thai Radio Center and Damrongdhama Center, a rights organization, prompting the arrest of six other old men. Four of the men confessed of buying sexual services from the the victims, but claimed they couldn’t “get it up” in the end.
Despite the old men’s protestations of innocence through impotence, Police said they’ll go forward collecting evidence to prosecute them, Thairath reported.
“Whether they were willing or not, it is still illegal,” police said. “Threatening the family of the victims will be also included in the prosecution. Police will gather evidence and witnesses to prosecute these men. Even though they denied the charges.”

Seven police officers accused of extorting money from a drug suspect who was later found hanged in a police cell in Songkhla province have been transferred pending a full investigation.
Pol Maj Gen Amphon Buarapporn, Songkhla police chief, ordered the transfer of the seven officers, Thairath Online reported on Wednesday.
They are accused of extorting money from drug suspect Suchart Muenwunnoo in return for reducing the seriousness of his offence.
The seven are: Pol Lt Col Pirom Iedsang, an investigation inspector, Pol Lt Sarnsern Chanthapaso, Pol Sub Lt Pichai Saiseng, Pol Snr Sg Maj Sawang Boonrod, Pol Snr Sg Maj Chawengsak Pongphong, Pol Snr Sg Maj Jaruwat Pudpong, and Pol Snr Sg Maj Phuttthathak Podthong. They are all based at Ranot police station.
Ranot police chief Arun Kulsiriwit said he had already ordered a probe into the seven officers' actions after receiving a complaint from relatives of the drug suspect. They alleged the policemen had demanded 500,000 baht from him in exchange for reducing the number methamphetamine pills found in his possession from 1,400 to 600.
Suchart was arrested with 1,400 speed pills in his possession on Oct 24. The next morning he was found dead in his police cell, reportedly having hanged himself with a blanket.
Pol Col Aru said the initial inquiry found grounds to the allegatkion the seven officers had extorted money from the suspect and he had reported the finding to the Songkhla police chief, who immediately ordered their transfer and further investigation.
The inquiry report will be submitted to the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC), the Ranot police chief said.
Suchart's relatives questioned whether he had really committed suicide and said they will not cremate his body until the truth is known.
The dead man's elder sister, Ratchadaporn Muenwunnoo, 52, and other in on Wednesday took Suchart's bodyto Songklanagarind Hospital for an autopsy to find the exact cause of his death.
Mrs Ratchadaporn said a team from Ranot police station arrested her brother at his house in tambon Ban Mai of Ranot district on Oct 24 and seized 1,400 methamphetamine pills, a pickup truck, a motorcycle, a two baht-weight gold necklace, a gold ring and three Buddha amulets. Suchart was then taken to Ranot police station for questioning.
Shortly after, Suchart phoned his wife Somkhid and said the police team demanded 500,000 baht in exchange for changing their report and reducing the number of methamphetmine pills from 1,400 to 600, said Mrs Ratchadaporn.
Mrs Somkhid met the police team and they agreed to reduce their demand to 344,000 baht and asked her husband to sign a letter authorising her to withdraw the cash from a bank. The money was handed over to the police team that day.
Mrs Somkhid said she gave a blanket to her husband after handing the money to the team. Suchart showed no sign of stress when she last visited him around midnight.
The family was shocked when they received a phone call about 6pm the next day from police, who said that Suchart had hanged himself with the blanket she said.
Mrs Somkid quoted a police officer on duty as saying that her husband was seen sleeping in his cell about 4am that day. The officer went out to smoke a cigarette and when he returned he found that Suchart was dead, having hanged himself in his cell using the blanket, she was told.

Hospital Apologises For Human Leg At Landfill
AMNAT CHAROEN — A hospital has confirmed that the human leg found by a garbage collector in Amnat Charoen province was amputated from one of its diabetic patients during a recent surgery.
The garbage collector alerted police after he stumbled upon the leg in a trash bag while scouring the landfill in Muang District for recyclable items yesterday.
Police said today that forensic tests reveal the leg was infected with diabetes. Boonyuen Kamhong, deputy Governor of Amnat Charoen, said the administration of a local hospital confirmed that the leg indeed belonged to one of its patients who recently underwent amputation surgery for diabetes.
According to Boonyuen, doctors at the hospital, which has not been named, intended to dispose of the leg in the biowaste bag, but accidentally placed it in trash bag for general refuse. Boonyuen said the hospital has apologised to the city municipality and promised to tighten its hygiene procedures.
"I have told every hospital in the province to be very careful about this," Boonyuen told reporters today. It could endanger public health if the limb of that patient was toxic. It could unwittingly lead to an epidemic."
He added, "It's very fortunate that no stray dog found that leg first, otherwise it might spread some diseases among the dogs. I am very concerned about this."

PHUKET: -- Two phony monks were arrested on Wednesday (November 19) in Patong while soliciting donations.
Manit Keawsen 33, and Sod Namjaidee, 49, both from Suphanburi, were arrested on Phrabaramee Rd after a call from a resident who was suspicious about their authenticity.
After the call, patrol officers were sent to look for the duo and found them talking to people on the street and handing out envelopes. When asked for their official monks’ IDs, both men said they had forgotten to bring the IDs with them.
Both were sent to Kathu for questioning and were searched. Officers found 1,000 donation envelopes with the address of a wat in Kanchanaburi, along with B2,780 in cash and – the real giveaway – some condoms.
A check with police records showed that both had been arrested before, in Hua Hin, for posing as monks. Manit was also arrested in August for possession of drugs.
The two admitted masquerading as monks, and said they could make B8,000 to B10,000 a day and used the money for partying and drugs.
They were defrocked and charged with fraud and misleading people into believing they were Buddhist monks.

Chonburi village evicts 48 HIV patients

131 ballots vote to evict HIV patients. Photo: The Glory Hut Foundation
Lang Nern villagers of Chonburi's Banglamung district have voted to remove 48 HIV patients at a local charity because they were thought to be hurting land values and business.
Residents cast 131 of 161 ballots Friday to demand the Glory Hut Foundation relocate its patients, according to the foundation. They were given six months to clear out.
"They are asking us to leave despite the fact that we donate them our excess goods and teach their children English," foundation spokeswoman Chanchanok Khamtong said.
She also said the charity cannot afford the fund to move out of its rented building at this time and never intended to affect the community.
"We're not disturbing the villagers. We just want to help care for our patients," she said.
Wichien Weluwan, president of Lang Nern community, said the villagers “do not hate” the HIV patients but cannot live with them because of the feelings in the community.
Lack of awareness about HIV/AIDS fuels a tremendous social stigma still attached to the disease, and public attitudes are considered one of the biggest challenges to combating the disease in Thailand.
According to people in Nang Lern, the patients have greatly affected the local economy, especially for real estate operators who offer room for rents. They claim to have received many cancellations after the HIV patients moved in.
Wichien said the community sympathizes with the patients but would like them moved away from residential areas to receive treatment. He added the Nang Lern community is willing to support them with donations, Bangkok Post and Voice TV reported.

Noppadol Srithong, 40, known as Damnoen, and his wife Supranee Srithong, 37, were apprehened in a pre-dawn raid on their house in tambon Nernbo of Phichit’s Sam Ngam district on Thursday, police said.
The couple has been charged with colluding in the murder and with theft related to the murder, of Amporn Damminsek, Ms Supranee’s lover.
Amporn, 49, the husband of Sakulta Damminsek, the sub-district chief of tambon Paikhwang in Muang district, was found murdered with his genitals cut off in a banana orchard along the Phichit River on Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs Sakulta had earlier filed a complaint with police asking them to find her husband who had been missing for a week. Amporn was wealthy and owned several rice harvesters worth several million baht.
During interrogation, Mr Noppadol confessed to all charges, but Mrs Supranee, who was known to have been sexually involved with the victim, denied all charges, Thairath Online reported.
The duo were detained in Phichit Prison pending further investigation.
It was earlier reported Ms Supranee had an affair with Amporn with her husband's consent after the man promised her valuables and cash in return for her favours, and that he later reneged on the promise.
Pol Maj Gen Sirin Padungcheewit, deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 6, said investigators have sufficient evidence against the two accused, even though the woman pleaded her innocence. There were no other suspects in the case, and it was not complicated, he added
